Authentic Greek food at Hungry Donkey

Spitalfields is not all markets and Indian food. Hidden between Wentworth Street and Commercial Street there’s an authentic Greek restaurant with some real good Mediterranean food. Check out what I tried at Hungry Donkey, the best meal to make you forget this grim rainy Sunday.IMG_0772

Hungry Donkey is a new Greek spot you might miss on a Sunday, almost eclipsed by all the Petticoat Lane Market Stalls. Get in for a relaxing oasis away from tourists and take in the calming yellow and white decor, almost like a summer house in Central London. I started out with a frape, the Greek summer coffee shake made with coffee, water and ice.

I then moved on to the starters: the pan-fried Saganaki cheese – always a winner – and the lovely zucchini fritters with some top notch hand-cut fries. Don’t miss out on the delicious Spanakopita spinach and cheese pastry, a perfectly executed classic.

Souvlaki fans will love Hungry Donkey: both its Halloumi and vegetable and its lamb souvlaki will remind you of the streets of Greece or Cyprus. IMG_0780

Unlike the many chains or the many dodgy-looking Mediterranean restaurants in London, Hungry Donkey both looks classy and fresh while still making some authentic, truly home-made Greek food. Worth a try!
